What an Awesome Anti-Racism Event!

On Saturday morning, Oct 27, 2018, thirty-six of our neighbors got together at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church to talk openly and to listen to one another about our own and Salem Presbytery’s vision for our Inter-racial Justice Ministry and Reconciliation. We sat in uncluttered talking circles, patterned after ancient Native American circles for solving problems. The circles were safe places where each member could speak in turn without fear of judgment, rebuke or retribution. We brought to the conversation our histories, our concerns, and our hopes. We discussed our preconceptions, our misconceptions, our questions, and our love.

Many churches in Salem Presbytery have long histories of racial tensions. All of us are called to “love our neighbors as ourselves.” Salem Presbytery has taken the bold step to affirm and act upon the principle of Black Lives Matter whose spirit of liberation works, “vigorously for freedom and justice for Black people and by extension, all people.” A vote to support this resolution will be taken in our next Presbytery meeting on Tuesday, November 13, 2018.

Happy November, NWPC Family!

I am humbled by the warm welcome you have given me as I begin my time here as the Interim Director of Children, Youth, and Family. Just as you did nearly five years ago when we first started to attend NWPC, you have shown me so much love and kindness. I am very excited for this opportunity, and to grow with all of you in my faith.

With love and gratitude,

Joanna

Dear NWPC Family,

As we come to the Season of Thanksgiving, I invite you to return to the Psalms during this time. The Book of Psalms is often called The Prayer Book of the Church. The Psalms depict for us the breadth and depth of human life, all of which is brought before God and laid open in prayer. The final Psalm is 150, and this Psalm offers a wonderful closing to all the prayers that have been prayed throughout this book. It is a Psalm of pure praise:

Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty firmament!

Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his surpassing greatness!

Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp!

Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe!

Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals!

Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

During the month of November, I invite you to pray through the Psalms as part of your prayer time. If you haven’t read them lately, I think you may be surprised that you find your very own needs being voiced to God by the Psalmist. We may not have had the words, and here we are given the words. Words that have been passed throughout the ages and still hold the power to transform our lives through prayer.

Our Thanksgiving Day Service will be a Meditation on the Psalms along with singing hymns of praise. Let’s gather together and celebrate the goodness of God!

With gratitude for each and every one of you,

Susan E. Moorefield

It is with great joy that the Session announces the arrival of Joanna Stuckey-Steele to our staff as the Interim Director of Children, Youth, and Family! To this ministry, Joanna brings many gifts: She has a open heart as well as an open mind. She welcomes questions of faith and extends the love of Christ to all. “Joanna was the prime organizer and planner of our Family Fun Day this summer. She has a real interest and enthusiasm for exploring creative, new ways for us to enjoy being the family of God.” (Ellen Lipscomb) Joanna holds a BA in Religious Studies and Humanities from Lees-McRae College. She will be a wonderful addition to our staff! It is no wonder that the Session unanimously approved Joanna!
