I remember being in school on minor holidays and wondering, if they were such a big deal, why were we in school that day? Then I grew up and realized that holidays like Halloween, ground hog day, and Valentine’s Day were only a way to celebrate something in school. These days aren’t really such a big deal at all in the “real world.” St. Patrick’s Day is another one of these not-big-deal days that we celebrate, and several years ago I began to wonder who St. Patrick was and why he had a day named after him at all. During my research I came across St. Patrick’s breastplate prayer. It has since been a favorite of mine, especially this part:

“Christ be with me, Christ within me,

Christ behind me, Christ before me,

Christ beside me, Christ to win me,

Christ to comfort and restore me,

Christ beneath me, Christ above me,

Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,

Christ in hearts of all that love me,

Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.”

What a beautiful sentiment. God is always with us. I urge you to look up St. Patrick’s story. It’s really much more interesting than eating cabbage and pinching people who don’t wear green.
