If it had not been the LORD . . . (Psalm 124:1a)

The psalmist knows that when things are going well, it is relatively easy to remember the goodness of God. The psalmist knows that when times are challenging, it is much more difficult to remember the gracious mercy of God. And the psalmist also knows just how forgetful we are as a people. This is why she calls her community (and us) to remember what God has done. For “If it had not been the LORD . . . then they would have swallowed us up alive” (vv. 1a, 3). “If it had not been for the LORD . . . then the flood would have swept us away” (vv. 1a, 4). “If it had not been for the LORD . . . then over us would have gone the raging waters” (vv. 1a, 5). During this trying time, let us remember the goodness of God and cry out with the psalmist: “Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth” (v. 8). – rc
