Why should I fear in times of trouble . . . (Psalm 49:5a)

In yesterday’s reading, Jesus himself commands that people not worry and instead, directs our attention to building the kingdom of God. Today, the psalmist reflects upon a world in disarray, a world of disorder, a world of chaos. Iniquity surrounds her and death looms large, yet she remains confident in who God is and she finds stability in what God is capable of doing. “God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for God will receive me,” she sings out (v. 15). Even when the world is crashing down around her – even when the world feels like it is crashing down around us – sh/we can remain faithful to God because God remains faithful to us. – rc
