Give ear to my words, O LORD;
give heed to my sighing.
Listen to the sound of my cry,
my King and my God,
for to you I pray.
O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice;
in the morning I plead my case to you, and watch. (Psalm 5:1–3)
This morning the palmist wakes up and with a sighing heart and makes her petition to God. She has endured so much and will likely need strength to endure more today. She pleads with God to hear her cry. She begs God to listen to her voice. She implores God to intervene in her life. She sounds to me like someone who feels as if the world is crashing down around her, as if everything is against her, as if everything is out of control – not unlike our own world right now where chaos seems to reign. But looks can be deceiving. Just as the psalmist cries out, we to join our voices in crying out for God to listen and respond. And just like the psalmist, we watch and wait, trusting that God hears us, knowing that God is with us, expecting God to grant us peace. – rc
