Sun01

Each Sunday in August, beginning on August 9 and running through September 6, from 9:45-10:45 am, we will have an opportunity to enjoy special programming designed to inspire and encourage us a church family through the experiences of our youth and young adults from our congregation.

Sunday, August 9 – Cole Wright will kick off our August Series with a report from his spring mission project to China.

Sunday, August 16 – Smitty will lead a study entitled, “This Is Our Story,” which will draw from the theme of this year’s Montreat Youth Conference and address the reality of how and why God meets us in our lives no matter what our stories may be. We will also examine how our stories connect to each other and to God.

Sunday, August 23 – The youth will lead a program on describing their experiences from their week at Montreat and give us an opportunity to hear their stories.

Sunday, August 30 – The youth mission team will give a report to the congregation on their experiences and the inspirational things they learned and experienced during their mission project in Charlotte, NC.

Sunday, September 6 – Smitty will be lead a study exploring concepts from a book by Walter Brueggemann entitled, “Sabbath as Resistance.”

51hehO8r42LThe Barksdale Class will begin a new study on May 31, 2015 with Luke – The Gospel of Reassurance by Michael Card.

“The gospel of Luke displays one of the most detailed accounts of the life of Jesus. How could a physician who never walked or talked with Jesus write such a compelling story of His life? This 8-lesson interactive study reveals the answer in a fascinating journey through the lands of the New Testament with host Michael Card. Exploring the historical and social context in which the gospel of Luke was writtten, it presents stirring insights to help participants gain a greater appreciation for the Word of God from a unique perspective that communicates the amazing life and teachings of Jesus.”

We encourage all class members to attend as many sessions as possible and welcome new members or inquirers into this study.  We hope to see you Sunday at 10am in the Barksdale Classroom!

lent wordKirk Night

The Fellowship/Kirk Night committee would like to invite you to come out on Wednesday evenings for Kirk Night. The meal begins at 5:30 p.m. and the program begins at 6:30 p.m. Smitty will be teaching a Kirk Night Lenten Bible Study each Wednesday until March 25. He will be using excerpts from the “Drawing Near” daily devotional guide to embark on a journey through the scriptures with a Lenten lens. The study will begin at 6:30 p.m. and conclude by 7:30 p.m.

Daily Lenten Devotional Guide 2015:   Draw Near by Lynne M. Baab

This guide invites us to journey with Jesus to his cross and resurrection with the help of the book of Psalms. Along this journey we’ll sample a variety of spiritual practices and discover prayerful ways we can draw nearer to God.

Lynne Baab is a Presbyterian Minister, prolific author, and theology lecturer. “Draw Near” features scripture reading, meditation, prayer, and reflection questions for each day of the Lenten season. Beautifully illustrated by Dave Baab, this devotional will be the perfect Lenten companion, making it easy to grab a moment for quiet meditation.

The devotional guides can be picked up in the church office, narthex, and in the fellowship hall.

Lunch Time Lenten Bible Study

For church members who may not be able to attend the Wednesday evening study we will be offering the same study during the day beginning at 12:30 p.m. and concluding at 1:30 p.m. each Wednesday beginning March 4 and concluding Wednesday, March 25.

Lenten Reflections Display

The Christian Education Committee has created a space for a Lenten Reflections Display which people can exhibit paintings, writings, photos, drawings, sculptures, and anything crafty that may demonstrate their thoughts, ideas, and feelings which are experienced during Lent. The display will be in the lobby of the fellowship hall. Our hope is that this display will create a worshipful environment that will inspire and encourage us all as we strive to search our souls during this Lenten Season.

New Barksdale Class Study

9780800720018The Barksdale Class has begun a new study from the book 10 Things Jesus Never Said by Will Davis, Jr. The class would love to have you join them on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m.

10 Things Jesus Never Said unmasks commonly believed myths about our relationship with God and shows how to replace them with the truth of how Jesus really feels about us. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter help small groups or individuals apply these truths to their current situations.

If you’ve ever felt you didn’t measure up to God’s standards, it’s time to stop believing the lies and start believing the things Jesus really did say!
