Not in the sanctuary proper, but in the sanctuary entrance across from the church office, there is a set of two windows. Because they are set apart from our other windows, these two are designed as a set, depicting a rainbow arching from one window to the other. The rainbow is thought to be symbolic of the promises of God to God’s people and God’s creation. In Genesis, we find this statement from God:
This is a sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. (Genesis 9: 12-13, 16)
For us, the meaning of the rainbow is simply this: God’s faithfulness is everlasting and God’s promises are sure.
